Priam my father is king of Troy, lord over a great city and all its lands; our house descends from Dardanus, who was got on the Pleiad Elektra by Zeus the Ever-Living. Hekuba my mother is Queen in the city, daughter of Dymas who was king in Phrygia and had Eunoë priestess of Sangarius to wife. I am his eldest son in marriage to the Queen, but he has other children by other wives and by the women of the household; if I am ever to be lord in Ilium I must prove worthy, time and again, before men and before the Gods. It is a heavy thing, to be Shepherd of the People, and I pray daily that I may prove fit to stand between our people and those who would be as ravening wolves.
